More than 2,500 people, including thousands of police and servicemen paid their respects to Staff Sgt. Jorge Oliveira. The Newark resident and Essex County Sherrifs Officer was killed on a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Wenonah native and 1st Lt. Salvatore Corma II was killed in Afghanistan by wounds sustained from a detonated IED. As details trickled in, the Cormas began to realize the heroics of their only son. His actions saved the lives of 19 men and lead to the capture of several insurgents. Already awarded the Purple Heart, his men have started the process to nominate him for the Medal of Honor.
Chariot races at Morristown High School help revive a dead language

At Morristown High, students in Mark Gutkoswki’s Latin class have a chance to build a final project to immerse themselves in Latin culture. Some build catapults, but many of the students chose to build and participate in a chariot race. For the 10th straight year, students race in heats until one winner is decided.

New Jersey fire fighters undergo simulated terrorism attack

A terrorist has detonated a bomb inside a major road tunnel during rush hour. Luckily this is just a drill, hosted by the Newark Fire Department for 10 groups of New Jersey fire fighters and port authority units. Over four days the group underwent training on how to respond to real world terrorism attacks.

New Jersey does its part to bring medical supplies to Haiti

It started with just a few e-mails, but in a week New Jersey has raised over $100,000 worth of medical supplies to be sent to Haiti. The Ambulatory Surgical Center of Union County is the state’s main drop-off point, but donations are being accepted all over New Jersey, at places like Kingley Health in Piscataway.
